The mission of Housing Resources, Inc. (HRI) is to assure housing for socially or economically vulnerable residents of Kalamazoo County by meeting the increasing housing needs with leadership and innovation.

Established in 1982, HRI has dedicated its efforts to finding housing solutions for individuals in the midst of a housing crisis, as well as on behalf of the community at large. Our services are designed to stabilize homeless households and help those in jeopardy of losing their housing, so they are more likely to avoid a repeat situation.

Today, Kalamazoo County shelters provide more than 93,000 nights of shelter each year.

Most people do not associate being homeless with kids who have one or more working parents, but far too often this is the reality of homelessness within our very own community. In Kalamazoo County a family of four must have an income of at least $21,000 ($10.29 an hour) to pay fair market price for a two-bedroom apartment, and an estimated 45% of our community renters cannot meet this threshold. As a result, one unexpected crisis—an illness, a broken relationship, or a lost job—can mean homelessness.

During the last year, Housing Resources, Inc. received over 5,000 requests for service from Kalamazoo County residents, providing an array of emergency, transitional, and permanent housing solutions . . . all with the ultimate aim of lifting these residents out of poverty and into self-sufficiency. On any given day, our staff will:
  • Provide back rent to a landlord so a family can keep their housing.
  • Respond to a frantic housing emergency call and arrange for accommodations at the HRI Family Shelter.
  • Make it possible for a mentally ill Rickman House resident to have the medication essential to holding down a part-time job.
  • Offer transitional housing to an unemployed middle-aged woman with three children, thereby enabling her to find employment, and eventually move to permanent housing.
